St. Martin of Tours lived in 4th Century Europe. Bishop and Confessor, soldier and penetant, Martin was an upright man of good stock who began life in modest beginnings as a centurion in the Roman military.
When Martin saw a beggar in the streets while on horseback one day, he sliced a part of his cloak to keep him warm.
Already a Christian, Martin was surprised to see Christ appear to him afterwards, thanking him for his good deed.
This Holy Vision had a profound effect on Martin, setting him on a lifelong Mission establishing Churches and Parishes throughout Europe, strengthening the presence of Christianity across The Empire.
This Watercolor piece took approximately 15 hours to complete. I composed and painted the main figure with the horse first, then added the aqueduct with the bridge and city sequence of the background afterwards. This is normally the opposite of how I work, but I felt the need to focus on Martin’s facial demeanor to highlight his inner Spiritual transformation.
Thank you for reading and being a part of my artistic journey! May God Bless you and your family!
